What We Explore

A client stops wanting sex after a baby. A husband can't stand the feel of his partner's body since she gained weight. A client tells you she's asexual. Each of these can look like a body-image problem, a character problem, or a trauma problem, and sometimes it is. But for a lot of neurodivergent clients there's a sensory story underneath, and most clinical training never teaches you to look for it.

In this 90-minute live conversation, Kory Andreas and Emma Smith bring 2 lenses to the same room: Kory's neuro-affirming work with autistic, ADHD, and PDA adults, and Emma's sex and couples therapy practice. Tammy Nelson moderates, pushes on the hard cases, and brings your questions in live. You'll look at how a changed sensory profile can drive changes in desire and touch, how to tell sensory overwhelm apart from asexual identity or an undisclosed trauma history (and what to do when it's more than one), and how an autistic partner's distress about an aversion differs from a narcissistic partner's contempt. From there the panel gets practical: when conjoint couples therapy helps, when it does harm, and why standard neurotypical relationship advice (the date night, the unscripted talk about what's missing) so often backfires.

You'll leave with assessment questions to use in your next session and a few adaptations to your couples and sex therapy work that make it safer for neurodivergent clients and their partners.

Learning Objectives

✻ Distinguish sensory-based changes in sexual desire and touch tolerance from body-image, relational, and characterological explanations, including narcissistic contempt, when a neurodivergent client presents with low desire or touch aversion.

✻ Identify at least three ways heteronormative or cisnormative assumptions can shape clinical assessment, therapeutic rapport, or treatment planning.

✻ Apply at least 2 adaptations to couples and sex therapy that reduce harm for neurodivergent clients, such as individual sessions before conjoint disclosure, structured communication formats, and predictable, low-sensory-load connection in place of standard date-night advice.

Instructor

Psychotherapist and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist

Dr. Emma Smith is an existential psychotherapist and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist who has spent more than fifteen years teaching desire to the audiences least willing to discuss it: military commands, law enforcement agencies, boardrooms, and retail floors. She is the founder of SOLILOQUIE and the creator of The Desire Recalibration™, an eight-week program for seven-figure founders and the relationships that went unattended while they built it.

Emma teaches from one premise: desire is a meaning problem, not a technique problem. Which is why the fix is never a new position or a nicer vacation; it's releasing the brake no one taught you was there.

She hosts The Intimate Philosopher podcast and keynoted the STIMULATE Sexual Wellness Symposium. Bookers describe her as the consummate professional who talks like your closest friend: clinically rigorous, disarmingly human, and genuinely funny about it.
